What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery, laparoscopy or minimally invasive surgery, is done through a few small cuts in the abdomen. The surgeon uses a thin camera and fine tools. The cuts are smaller than in open surgery. So there is usually less pain, a smaller scar and a faster return to normal life.
Common keyhole operations at Unittas include:
- Gallbladder removal: see gallbladder stone surgery cost
- Hernia repair: see hernia operation cost
- Appendix removal: see appendix operation cost
- Hysterectomy (uterus removal): see hysterectomy cost
- Fibroid removal: see fibroid surgery cost
- Ovarian cyst removal: see ovarian cyst surgery cost
- Surgery for an ectopic pregnancy: see ectopic pregnancy surgery cost
- Diagnostic laparoscopy, to find the cause of pain or infertility

Frequently asked questions
How long does laparoscopic surgery take?
Most operations take 30 minutes to 3 hours. It depends on the type of surgery and how complex it is.
Is laparoscopic surgery better than open surgery?
For many operations, keyhole surgery means less pain, a lower chance of wound infection and a faster recovery. Your surgeon will tell you if it is right for you.
Will I have scars after laparoscopic surgery?
The scars are small, usually 0.5 to 1 cm long, and fade a lot over time.
How soon can I go home after laparoscopic surgery?
Many patients go home within 1 to 3 days, depending on the operation. The package covers the number of days shown in the price table.
When can I go back to work?
Desk work is often possible within 1 to 2 weeks, or 2 to 4 weeks after a hysterectomy. Heavy physical work may need 4 to 6 weeks.
Does keyhole surgery need general anaesthesia?
Yes. You are fully asleep (general anaesthesia) for most keyhole operations in the abdomen.
What are the common side effects after keyhole surgery?
Mild shoulder pain from the gas used during surgery, bloating and tiredness are common. They usually settle in a few days.
Can keyhole surgery be changed to open surgery?
Yes, but this is rare. The surgeon may switch to open surgery if it is safer for you during the operation.
Is laparoscopic surgery suitable for older patients?
Yes. Many older people do well with keyhole surgery when they are fit for it.
How do I prepare for laparoscopic surgery?
You may need to fast, stop some medicines and get help at home for the first few days. Our team will guide you.
What if I need two procedures at the same time?
You do not pay full price twice. The second procedure is charged at up to half its package rate, and any further one at up to a quarter.
Is laparoscopic surgery covered by health insurance?
Most health insurance plans cover medically needed keyhole surgery, subject to policy terms. Unittas offers cashless treatment with major insurers. See the insurance accepted at Unittas.
Will I need physiotherapy after keyhole surgery?
Sometimes it helps to build up your tummy muscles, but many people recover well without it.
