Will I go through menopause after a hysterectomy?
Only if your ovaries are removed as well. If they are left in place they keep making hormones and menopause arrives at its natural time.
Are the ovaries always removed with the uterus?
No. They are kept wherever it is safe to do so, particularly before menopause. Your surgeon will discuss it with you beforehand.
Which type of hysterectomy is best?
The one that suits your uterus. Keyhole and vaginal routes mean less pain and a faster recovery, but a large fibroid uterus or previous surgery may make the open route safer.
Do I still need cervical smears after a hysterectomy?
If the cervix was removed for a non-cancer reason, usually not. If the cervix was left in place, yes. Ask your surgeon which applies to you.
How soon can I go back to work after a hysterectomy?
Desk work in about four weeks after keyhole surgery, longer after open surgery. Physical work usually needs six weeks or more.
Will a hysterectomy fix a prolapse?
Not on its own. A prolapse repair also rebuilds the pelvic floor support, which is a different operation with different aftercare.
