Early Pregnancy Ultrasound in Chennai

An early pregnancy ultrasound, also called the first-trimester scan or viability scan, is usually performed between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. This safe, painless test uses sound waves to confirm that the pregnancy is healthy, accurately date the pregnancy, detect the baby's heartbeat, and rule out common early complications.

At Unittas Hospital, we perform more than 5,000 early pregnancy scans every year using the latest 3D/4D ultrasound machines.

When is Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Done?

Gestational Age Purpose of the Scan What You Will See
5-6 weeks Very early viability scan Gestational sac, yolk sac
6-7 weeks First heartbeat scan Fetal pole + cardiac activity (heartbeat)
7-9 weeks Standard viability + dating scan Accurate dating, heartbeat, basic anatomy
8-10 weeks Dating + early anomaly check Limb buds, nasal bone, basic brain structures

The ideal time for most women is 7-8 weeks, when the heartbeat is almost always visible and dating is most accurate (±3-5 days).

What Can Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Detect?

  • Confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy: Rules out ectopic pregnancy
  • Single or multiple pregnancy: Detect twins or triplets
  • Fetal heartbeat and heart rate: Normal 110-170 beats/min
  • Exact gestational age: Most accurate dating method
  • Expected due date: Calculate your delivery date
  • Yolk sac and gestational sac size: Assess early development
  • Early signs of miscarriage: Or blighted ovum
  • Large ovarian cysts or fibroids: Affecting pregnancy
  • Cause of bleeding or spotting: Investigate symptoms

How Is the Scan Performed?

An early pregnancy ultrasound scan is performed in a simple, comfortable process:

  • Most early scans (6-9 weeks) are done transvaginally for sharper images
  • From 9-10 weeks onwards, transabdominal scan is often sufficient
  • The entire appointment takes 15-20 minutes
  • You will receive printed images and, if desired, a short video clip of the heartbeat
  • No special preparation is needed except a comfortably full bladder for transabdominal scans

Normal Milestones on Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

Weeks Gestational Sac Yolk Sac Fetal Pole Heartbeat
5 Visible May appear Not yet No
6 10-20 mm Visible Visible Usually yes
7 >20 mm Visible 5-12 mm Always visible
8 Large Visible CRL 15-22 mm Strong

CRL = Crown-Rump Length – the most accurate way to date pregnancy in the first trimester.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if no heartbeat is seen at 6 weeks?

This is often normal if your dates are slightly off. We recommend a repeat scan in 7-10 days. At Unittas Hospital, we offer free repeat scans within 7 days if the heartbeat isn't visible on your first visit.

Is early pregnancy ultrasound safe for my baby?

Yes, ultrasound is completely safe. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and has been used in obstetrics for over 50 years with no known harmful effects. Multiple studies confirm its safety in pregnancy.

Should I come with a full or empty bladder?

For very early scans (under 8 weeks), transvaginal ultrasound with an empty bladder gives the best images. For later scans or if only transabdominal is done, a moderately full bladder helps. Our staff will guide you when you book.
