Most women experience only mild pressure or discomfort during TVS. The thin probe is smaller than a speculum used in Pap smears. Relaxing your muscles helps make the procedure more comfortable.
For patients who have not had vaginal intercourse, transabdominal ultrasound is typically recommended as an alternative. However, TVS can be performed if medically necessary after discussion with your doctor.
TVS can detect a pregnancy 1-2 weeks earlier than abdominal ultrasound. The probe's proximity to the uterus provides clearer images of the tiny gestational sac and early heartbeat, typically visible from 6 weeks.
